Culture Data study - How Orange trains its employees in Data and AI

Discover the Vision of Roxane Marsan, Director of Orange Campus Tech at Orange

Micropole has unveiled its Data Culture survey "Stratégie Data: de la vision à l'engagement collectif", conducted with OpinionWay. This study highlights training as an essential lever for democratizing the use of Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI), a challenge identified by both the managers and employees surveyed. However, making these tools accessible to all remains a major challenge.

Roxane Marsan, Director of the Orange Campus Tech, explains how the Group structures its training courses around Data and AI, tailoring them to the specific needs of business lines and strategic priorities, while promoting a gradual, collaborative skills upgrade.

"When it comes to Data and AI training, taking business needs into account is essential."

In this exclusive interview, Roxane Marsan, Director of the Orange Campus Tech where Group employees are trained in Data and Artificial Intelligence, explains how the training offer is structured according to the specific realities of businesses and countries. She emphasizes that acculturation to Data and Artificial Intelligence cannot be achieved in isolation. It must be co-constructed with the company's various functions. At Orange, Data skills requirements are identified in collaboration with the business lines, to meet the specific operational and strategic challenges of each department.

This collaborative approach ensures that training courses are not only focused on technical aspects, but also adapted to the realities of local businesses and contexts. This encourages wider adoption of Data and AI, while enhancing the agility and operational efficiency of employees across the Group.

How do you organize your Data and AI training courses?

Roxane Marsan: "Orange has been offering training courses dedicated to Data for many years. Initially reserved for technical profiles, they were democratized around five years ago with the creation of Orange Campus Data and AI, with the aim of creating a common training base for all professions.

The priority issue of developing Data and AI skills is co-sponsored by the Orange Innovation Business Division and the Group HR Department. In concrete terms, we have defined three levels:

  • Acculturation" courses for all employees, to help them understand Orange's strategic challenges, as well as regulatory, ethical and environmental issues. Our flagship DataIA Starter module has been taken by over 25,000 employees in all countries in three years.
  • A second "business" level aimed at users wishing to integrate Data and AI into their day-to-day professional lives. For example, training in data visualization are offered to HR managers, financial managers, etc.
  • Finally, a third level is aimed at expert profiles needing to develop specialized skills. Retraining courses lasting several months are also available. "

How do you define these training courses?

"First of all, we identify the operational needs of the various divisions: it's essential for us to take their strategic priorities into account, so that we can put in place the appropriate teaching systems.

Our training strategy is closely linked to Orange's strategy for Data and AI. Data quality and data governance, for example, are fundamental to the development of high-performance AI systems: we have therefore created specific training courses on these subjects.

I would add that while certain themes are easy to share, such as that of data visualizationthere are also very local systems - for specific tools or practices - which are more the responsibility of individual countries. When relevant, we generalize their innovations across the group, as sharing good ideas is an essential dynamic for us. "

As with every technological adoption curve, Data has brought together early adopters who have become our best ambassadors.

The study we conducted with OpinionWay shows that most training is focused on top managers. How do you prioritize the target audience?

"There's no one-size-fits-all approach, but we don't favor any particular categories. While marketing, customer relations and technical teams were among the first to benefit from training, the arrival ofGenerative AI has sparked widespread interest.

Today, all professions express the need to be supported in their skills development. An employee's entry into a training program may come from a strategic choice made by the company, from recommendations made by managers based on the skills and priority projects of their employees, or from their own individual appetite. In fact, the most effective training courses are often those recommended by employees themselves, and which at the same time meet the company's priorities, as reflected in satisfaction indicators such as the Net Promoter Score. "

73% of the employees questioned in our study feel that they are not optimally trained in data. What does this figure mean to you?

"The big challenge is to move from acquired knowledge to a skill that can be put to use. I've learned something, but in concrete terms, how do I use it in my business? As with every technological adoption curve, Data has brought together early adopters who have become our best ambassadors. We rely heavily on these communities. They often become in-house trainers, and invest a great deal of time in sharing and raising the skills of their colleagues. "

Today, we have management controllers taking 20-30 hour training courses in data analysis, because it's becoming essential for them to carry out their day-to-day work much more effectively.

-Roxane Marsan
Director of Orange Campus Tech at Orange

How do you develop the content of your training courses?

"This is indeed an essential question. Some developments are the result of regulatory changes. For example, the European regulation on Artificial Intelligence requires compliance and risk assessment, which we need to prepare our employees for.

Environmental concerns are also driving the enhancement of our systems. For example, our data engineers are now trained in eco-design and how to reduce the carbon footprint of everything they implement.

We have also broadened our offerings by reinforcing intermediate training courses, which are designed to provide the professions with fairly advanced data skills. Today, we have management controllers taking 20-30 hour training courses in data analysis, as this is becoming indispensable to their day-to-day work.

Overall, we try to remain very agile, offering very different modules: some short and digital, others requiring synchronous support from a trainer and several days' involvement of the employee. Sometimes, these training courses bring together employees from different countries, professions or sub-departments. By understanding and deciphering the technologies together, employees can project themselves onto the concrete applications in their respective professions. This encourages the emergence and prioritization of new use cases.

In conclusion, we are continuing todevelop our training programs as closely as possible to our needs, in particular to keep pace with the constant emergence of new technologies and models such as Generative AI, in order to strengthen our key areas of expertise for the Group! "
